The Royal Family is the ruler of the Monster Kingdom. They are phoenixes. Their family name is von Phoenix.

Members

There are nine siblings in the Royal Family introduced so far (eldest to youngest):

  • "First prince" Fuhito (not a sibling of the current generation; he is the survivor from the previous generation who went into dormancy and revived in the current war for the throne, survives the royal battle but is no longer a member of the Roayl Family)
  • Duken (a royal from the previous generation, long thought to be the first prince, killed by Fuhito and turned into an android; as an android he is destroyed by Riza)
  • First princess Sylvia (survived the war for the throne, no longer a memeber of the Royal Family)
  • Second prince Gilliam (deceased due to infection by alien microbes)
  • Second princess Lillianne (survived the war, no longer a  member of the Royal Family)
  • Third prince Salieri (deceased, died from his botched assassination attempt on Lillianne)
  • Third princess Sherwood (the official "winner" of the royal war, chooses not to take the throne)
  • Forth prince Emile (killed by chronic illness; his soul lives on)
  • Fifth prince Severin (killed by Lillianne in a duel)

Besides the members listed above, 2 unnamed royals from the previous generation are also shown. One resembles Salieri with a cocky attitude; he tried to kill baby Fuhito but even as an infant Fuhito killed him with his telekinesis. The other one went into hiding and is old and ill by the time he is introduced; however Sylvia tracked him down and took off his oxygen-mask, killing him.

Members of the Royal Family are all given androids/gynoids depending on their gender. The female members get gynoids while the males get androids. The androids/gynoids will self-destruct when master dies.

Some royals have telekinetic ability like Emile and Fuhito.

Characteristics

All memebers of the Royal Family takes on a humanoid appearance before they become the ruler of monsters. At this stage they all have light skin, blonde hair, and red eyes with slits for pupils (one notable exception is Salieri, who on the colored page has dark skin and white hair). Royals have 4 stages of development:

Initial Stage

All royals are born as mortals, they are excatly like humans (except for a few attributes) in the process of development, they will undergo the same process of aging and, if the royal survives long enough, will grow old and have age-related problems. As mortals, they are the most vulnerable at this stage, forcing them to resurrect blood warriors as body guards. Most casualties happen during this stage.

Maturation

At some point, a royal may experience an event (normally having his or her soul leaving the body) that would trigger physical development. A royal at this point is able to utilize the sacred flames of the adult phoenix. However, their souls must leave their body in order to fully use the power. Unlike the biological maturation of their flesh body, this kind of maturation can be activated regardless of the royal's biological age; for example, although Sylvia is older than Hime, Hime unlocked her phoenix-flame form much earlier.

In their phoenix-flame form the royals keep their body shape, but they are now made entirely out of flames. Since not all royals reach this stage , whoever unlocks the phoenix-flame form first is usually the winner because they are pretty much invincible to their siblings. It is also not unusual for the royal to abandon his or her servants and mortal body at this point.

If more than one royal were to mature to this point within the same generation, they would try to defeat other by absorbing each other's spirits.

Adult

Eventually the royal would abandon his or her flesh body and reach full maturation. At this stage the phoenix flame is stablized; the royals can now take on a normal body and materialize clothes. They are true immortals at this point. Two small spikes of hair also grow out horizontally in opposite directions just above their forehead.

Ruler

The ruler has the appearence of a gigantic phoenix made of pure flames. Normally, only one royal survives each generation's war and would be crowned the next ruler of monsters. Through a large part of the series it is unknow how a member of the royalty can become ruler (it is simply described as "receive the adult's blessing". In the chapter towards the end, Sylvia discovered that there is only one phoenix, meaning, when a royal is chosen to become the next ruler, his or her spirit is simply merged with the previous ruler. In other words, the "ruler" is actually a collection of spirits of all the winners of the previous wars.

Blood Warriors

By using their blood (Flame of Life, in anime), members of the royalty can resurrect the dead to be their half-immortal "Blood Warriors." The blood warriors have to keep drinking the royals' blood every few days, or they will die forever, and cannot be resurrected again. It is very rare for a member of the Royal Family to have a human (too weak) or a vampire (questionable loyalty) as a blood warrior, and can be to some very shocking. They are not allowed to resurrect someone they have killed themselves, nor are they allowed to have an army, however this was occasionally broken.

  • Hiro, Lillianne's blood warrior, a human. Currently leveled up to a flame warrior.
  • Madeleine, the Mermaid.Emile's Blood Warrior. Later becomes Sylvia's blood warrior after the death of Emile. Receives the flame of life from Emile through Keziah and becomes a flame warrior after Sylvia abandons her.
  • Mikasa, killed by Severin, then revived as a Blood Warrior by him, despite the rules. Later became Sylvia's Blood Warrior after Severin's death, suggested by the Fly Man. Human, but with a parasite nano-weapon implanted in her head by the Fly Man. After Sylvia abandons her she lost her status as a blood warrior, relying on Trioxin to survive.
  • Kiniski, a vampire. Sylvia killed him with an ash stake through the heart, but in the process her hand was pricked and some of her blood accidentally got into Kiniski's wound, resurrecting him. He bonded Sylvia with leather straps, gaged her, and connected a valve to her arm so that he could drink her blood. He is not a true blood warrior because he does not accept the status; for example, he does not transform like normal blood warriors when Sylvia fell off the tower.
  • Ryu Ryu, Sherwood's blood warrior (not a blood warrior in the anime). A panda from the zoo that accidentally strangled himself playing with a rubber tire.

Flame Warriors

Once a royal have matured to point and obtained the ability to use phoenix fire, they can upgrade their Blood Warrior into a Flame Warrior, removing the requirement to drink blood every few days and obtaining the ability to use minor/weaker phoenix fire.
